The University of Hawaii men’s basketball team fell into a deep hole early and was never able to fully recover in falling to UC Irvine 76-68 on Thursday night in Irvine, Calif.

The Anteaters scored 12 of the game’s first 14 points and never trailed. The Rainbow Warriors climbed back to within three points in second half, but were unable to avoid just their second loss in the last 11 games.

Kamaka Hepa led UH (14-5, 5-2 Big West Conference) with 17 points and 10 rebounds. JoVon McClanahan added 14 points and Noel Coleman scored 13.

DJ Davis had 18 points and Dawson Baker had 15 points and 10 boards for UC Irvine (13-6, 6-1).

On Thursday night in Honolulu, the UH women’s basketball team rallied in the fourth quarter to force overtime before falling short against UC Irvine 71-67 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Wahine never led in the first half and trailed by as many as 14 points in the third quarter.

Still behind 44-33 to start the fourth quarter, UH rallied and eventually took its first lead of the game, 52-51, on a layup by Lily Wahinekapu with two minutes on the clock before the Anteaters took back the lead and led 56-54 heading into the final minute. Wahinekapu then made a pair of free throws to force the game into overtime.

In the extra period, UC Irvine scored the first six points and then held off UH by making 6 of 8 from the free-throw line.

Daejah Phillips had 13 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Rainbow Wahine (6-10, 4-3). Wahinekapu finished with 12 points and eight rebounds, Nnenna Orji also scored 12 and Kallin Spiller added 10 points.

Hunter Hernandez led the Anteaters (5-13, 3-5) with 19 points and seven rebounds.

Both Hawaii teams play UC Riverside on Saturday, the men on the road and women at home.
