The Kansas City Royals announced on Friday the signing of 30 international free agents, including pitcher Marwys Jorge, the No. 49 prospect on the international Top 50 Prospects list by MLB.com.

Jorge is a 16-year-old right-hander from the Dominican Republic. According to Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com, he has trained with Edinson Vólquez, a 15-year major league veteran who pitched for the 2015 World Series champion Royals.

Another member of the international signing class is 18-year-old catcher Hyungchan Um, whose father, Jong-soo, played one season with Atlanta’s High-A affiliate in 2001, reportedly making the Um family the first South Korean father-son duo to sign with major league clubs.

The 30-player international free agent class is the largest in franchise history, surpassing the 28-man class of 2022. The players come from six countries: Dominican Republic (16), Venezuela (eight), México (three), The Netherlands (one), Nicaragua (one) and South Korea (one).

“We’re proud of this group and excited to get them all in our system and help them achieve their dreams,” said Rene Francisco, the club’s senior vice president, assistant general manager/major league and international operations. “We believe we have a strong mix of high-end pitching talent, athleticism that can play all over the field, and power.”
