It was a huge weekend for prep wrestling across the state with several large tournaments, key dual meet match-ups and the All-Star Dual taking place Tuesday of last week.
Skyridge came away with a big tournament win at the Redhawks Rumble hosted by Bountiful.
The Falcons didn’t have any individual champions but four of their wrestlers placed second with Easton Josie (120), Nate Terrazas (126), Ryan Rea (138), and Billy Ferguson (157) to best the 21-team field by scoring 186 points. Roy (170) and Fremont (156) were second and third respectively.
“The kids are starting to gel as a group and believe in themselves,” said Skyridge head coach Lyle Mangum. “We hope to keep progressing in the next three weeks.”
Other local teams did well as Lone Peak (138) was fourth and Orem (136) fifth and each had some outstanding individual performances.
Corbin Baumgartner (175), Mahkyi Smith (215) and Cooper Mumford (285) won individual titles for the Knights while Orem’s Braedon Kinney (120) and Juan Cruz (126) claimed gold medals.
Orem’s Aaron Hansen placed second at 285 pounds losing to Lone Peak’s Mumford in the championship final.
Local teams and wrestlers also had a good showing at the Rockwell Rumble, the state’s largest and most competitive wrestling tournament.
The Rumble, as it is most often called, has been a bit peripatetic in recent years and this season was held at the Real Salt Lake Training Academy and Facility in Herriman.
Clovis High School from the Fresno, California area made the trip to the Beehive State and easily won the tournament scoring 377 points. The Cougars had six champions and one runner-up to easily outpace Layton, the top Utah team so far this year. The Lancers scored 221 points.
Payson was the top local team scoring 175 points while Pleasant Grove was sixth with 150. Wasatch (140.5) placed eighth while Mountain View (106) and Lehi (97) were just outside the top ten at 11th and 12th respectively. A total of 71 teams and 698 individual wrestlers competed in the varsity tourney with another 518 wrestlers competing in the JV tourney hosted by Riverton.
Two local wrestlers brought home individual titles as Pleasant Grove’s Jacob Carson won the 126-pound class and Westlake’s Brayden Robison bested the field at 144 pounds.
Spanish Fork’s Karson Shelley (113), Westlake’s Korbin Chuchran (120), Wasatch’s Ryder Robinson (138), Pleasant Grove’s Bradlee Farrer (150), and Lehi’s Isaac Terrell (285) all placed second.
Provo went 3-5 at the Hunter Duels won by Olympus, but Christian Beesley (120) went 8-0 in his matches.
In dual meet action last week West Wendover Nevada defeated Tintic 48-29 but Miner wrestlers Gordon Grimstead (106), Neut Kunz (144), Daren Johnson (150), Dalton Holden (157), and Corbin Atherley (175) all were victorious.
In other dual meet action from last week, Cedar Valley slipped past Stansbury 41-36, Wasatch whipped Maple Mountain 72-12, Payson defeated Corner Canyon 38-32, Lehi lapped Jordan 66-9, Westlake suplayed Skyridge 50-30, Pleasant Grove pinned American Fork 66-12, Corner Canyon crushed Lone Peak 53-19, Orem topped Timpview 54-23 but lost to Carbon 42-40, Timpanogos tilted Alta 43-28, Skyridge doubled up Bingham 48-24, while Salem Hills slammed Provo 57-15.
Girls Wrestling: Local teams and wrestlers showed well at the Girls Rockwell Rumble.
Westlake (170) was the highest finishing local team as the Thunder placed fourth overall. The tournament was won by Grand Junction Central High School out of Colorado with 222 points. Bear River (184.5) and Uintah (178) were second and third respectively.
Mountain View finished seventh with 135 points while Maple Mountain (127), Springville (125), Wasatch (116), and Cedar Valley (115) finished ninth through 12th in that order. A total of 48 teams and 393 female grapplers competed in the tournament.
Local champions included Mountain View’s Isla Baeza (130), Springville’s Hotai Valeti (155), Maple Mountain’s Aurelia Ramos (170), Salem Hills’ Jocelyn Hepler (190) and Westlake’s Keilikki Rarick (285).
Ramos defeated Timpview’s Taimane Fiatoa 2-1 in a very closely contested final. It was just the first loss of the season for Fiatoa, who is a two-time defending state champion for the Thunderbirds.
Besides Fiatoa, Mountain View’s Makenzi McCoy (105), Westlake’s Ashley Cannon (125) and Hailey Piig (140), along with Springville’s Hayley Harris (155), all placed second.
Skyridge’s Madi Sherman (120) won her weight class at the Girls Redhawks Rumble.
In girls dual meet action, Cedar Valley defeated Stansbury 54-30 as Aubrey Meyer (105), Stephanie Schmolke (110), Kennedy Fowler (125), AnnaLee Wright (130), Alexandra Gates (135), Rya Balmforth (140), Alison Meyer (145), Madison Mayes (145), and Yesmina Kava (190) secured victories.
Other dual meet results had Copper Hills crushing Maple Mountain 60-24 but Lilly Lake (115), Sage Eggleston (130), Aurelia Ramos (170) and Hannah McCormick (235) all won their bouts for the Golden Eagles.
